Treating Red Wine Stains In Carpet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Red wine is a challenging stain to remove from carpet, especially if your carpet is light-colored. However, with an immediate response and the right household cleaning supplies, you might just save yourself a call to a professional cleaner!

Below is a step-by-step guide to cleaning this notoriously difficult stain from our specialists here at DRL:

1. Blot up the excess spill
Use a fresh cloth or towel to blot any excess liquid from the spill. Never rub or scrub the stain as it may potentially damage the carpet fibers and spread the liquid

2. Create a detergent
In a small bowl, mix 1/4 teaspoon of transparent dish soap such as Dawn or Ivory with 1 cup warm water

3. Apply mixture to stain
Use a damp cloth or paper towel to apply mixture to the soiled area. Leave for 3 to 5 minutes

4. Blot up mixture from carpet
Start working from the outside in to absorb the mixture from the carpet

5. Apply clean water to area
Use a clean cloth or towel to apply small amounts of fresh water to the area to remove residue of detergent. Re-soiling of the area can occur if left behind

6. Dry the area
Absorb excess water using paper towels and allow the carpet to completely dry

If this method does not work, you may need to call a professional cleaning service to address the stain. But remember, the faster you treat the stain, the higher success rate you will have!
