How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn?
Spring is officially here, which means the growing season for grass is now approaching! Homeowners will have to put their lawn mowers back to work to combat this remarkably fast growing plant. To maintain a healthy and well kept lawn, it is generally recommended to cut your grass around once per week.
Cutting your grass not only gives your lawn a uniform appearance, but also provides health benefits, such as improved root development and reduction of weed growth. The remaining clippings will even release nutrients back into the soil, increasing the soil's quality in which your grass resides!
However, make sure you don't cut too short. It is ideal to cut your grass between 2 and 1/2 to 3 and 1/2 inches to avoid stressing your turf and limiting the amount of energy it can create through photosynthesis. This can weaken the plant's roots, increase the risk of weeds, and make your lawn more susceptible to diseases!
Did You Know?: The smell that comes from a fresh cut lawn is due to a group of chemicals known as Green Leaf Volatiles (GLV's). These chemicals are produced by grass as a response to stress after being cut!
